iPhone 3G w/iOS4 - slow & very buggy

Ever since I updated my iPhone 3G to iOS4, I have noticed extreme lagging on most apps, especially iBooks.  I don't even use iBooks, as it takes forever to just load the app, and when you have books or PDF's, it even takes longer.  It seems like the app uses to much CPU and memory, though I have not researched this, just wanted to complain about it.

Also, has anyone else noticed a weird bug in the Mail App?  When I archive all my emails through the web browser (Gmail), it still shows I have email (weird placement emails with some weird dates) on my iPhone, even though I have no emails in my inbox in Gmail.  The emails have no subjects or content, and have some weird dates associated with them (see pics). Restarting the iPhone helps with slowness & lagging, though, it always seems to continue after a few days of use.  I don't even use my iPhone much anymore, since I'm always in front of a computer (another post), and my experince with iOS4, makes it even worse.

All very strange, and I'm not the only one who has experienced this (see links).  Rob, a co-worker, has confirmed the same bugs on his iPhone 3G, I wonder if it's specific to 3G phones.  God forbid, they're still iPhone 3G owners out there!

Yup, I see the same behaviors. I'm hoping Apple addresses these issues. I definitely *will not* buy a new iPhone just to bring the performance back into the realm of "acceptable"...

I saw a link somewhere on Hacker News yesterday that suggested you turn off Spotlight (Settings > General > Home Button > Spotlight Search) to improve performance.

I turned off Spotlight for everything except Applications, and I've experienced a slight improvement after rebooting. Since upgrading to 4.0.1 with Spotlight turned off, performance is --much-- better on my 3G. No more swipe, wait 30 seconds, tap, wait 30 seconds, and so on.

Has anyone noticed their wired headset controls (start/stop/skip) no longer working?

for what phone?  Was it working before you updated?  I know the iPod Headphones don't have full functionality on iPhones, or, at least 3G models

@fady My Klipsch 3G worked fine w/ 4.0. Stopped working with 4.0.1. The buttons work fine w/ my MBP.

@kevin:  that is weird, and puzzling.  I'll keep my eye out though...

I read a lot about these performance problems as well (persisting beyond even the vaunted "2 hard resets" trick), and was reluctant to try the 4.0.1 upgrade on my 3G. Then I found several articles describing the difference in performance between "upgrade"-installed iOS4 and "restore"-installed iOS4. Sync all app content to iTunes, back up the whole iPhone (just in case you want to revert), then download the latest ipsw for your model and shift-click "restore" to install it. You end up with a factory-default phone with your chosen iOS version, to which you then re-sync all your apps/content. Some apps will need to be reconfigured with personal settings (logins, etc.), but you end up with a much cleaner installation that performs really well even on a 3G. Also, since iOS4 will background every app that supports it, you'll have to occasionally remove some apps from the background when it starts to bog down. Hopefully Apple will release an update supporting per-app preference settings for backgrounding.

@joe: that is some sound advice, everything you said is correct. I always perform a clean install with major updates, as the reconfiguring is easy, though, I do hate having to type in all those Wi-Fi passwords again & again & again...

The Mail App bug is the most recent mishap I have noticed, which is strange. In general, I have always noticed acceptable slowness with every model, besides 4, since I dont have one yet. I love the OS, but sometimes i feel the hardware lacks, so  I'm very pleased Apple decided to use the A4 processor, I have been waiting for a snapper device.  I remember when I first used the first gen iPhone, I was blown away, everything was so new and unique..then i caught up with it. :)

My problem may be the notorious lint in the headset jack. It looks like there's some lint at the bottom, so as soon as I find a paperclip, it should be fixed.

Correlation != Causation. The problem just happened to be noticed after I upgraded to 4.0.1.

The quickest way to fix your phone is to jailbreak and then install "Backgrounder" via Cydia. Once installed you can disable backgrounding system wide. The only apps I allow to run are Mail and Phone. Now my iPhone3G works decently well on iOS4.

@pplante: that is another good option.  Good step by step instructions can be found at iClarified.  These guys have been around since the first gen jailbreak :)

my iphone 3g is experiencing the very same issues, ever since ive updated to the new update my apps close out, my messages take forever to load, my emails no longer load to inform me i have new messges, than 5 days late 120 messages will appear. Im very disatisfied with apple at this point. I do not use my apps the way i use to. The biggest issue is my camera. My camera on the iphone will take literally minutes to capture a picture than for it to go into my camera roll, it freezes all the time. Times like this i wish i would have kept my blackberry 8900.............

I experience the exact same buggy performance, crippling slowness and actual emails morphing into empty emails from 1969. restarting the phone seems to help revert the emails.

Anyone have a simple solution?

simple solution, would be to update your phone.  The new iOS update should take care of the known issues with the iPhone3G
